ColdSun in Mexico for short documentary on 3D Artist Edgar Mueller

ColdSun directors Alessio Cuomo and Sander de Nooij were invited in Mexico to make a short documentary about 3D Street Artist Edgar Mueller. ColdSun was commissioned by the state of Nayarit to film the artist during his two week project. The 3D painting project 'Hacia Donde Voy' (Where am I going) is part of a bigger project, 'Ciudad de las Artes' (City of Arts) in the city of Tepic, Mexico.

The film is currently in post-production and will soon be online.

ODE AAN DE STAD UTRECHT
Kun je door liefde voor je stad overweldigd worden? Zoals je dat kunt hebben bij de echte mensen van wie je houdt. Dat het -bij momenten- bijna te groot, te veel wordt? Een melancholische staat-van-zijn. En dat je dan, bij wijze van spreken, bijna verlangt naar iets dat je met beide benen op de grond zet? Of iets om over te klaogen, waor. Als je Utrechter bent.
Neem mijn maandag. Begon met schaatsen op de verlaten Molenpolder. Met de twee leukste vrouwen die ik ken. Maar dit terzijde. Op nog geen vijf minuten van Overvecht, zodat ik het mistige winterlicht boven de stadse contouren bleef zien. Thuisgekomen trof ik een filmpje van de Utrechters Alessio Cuomo en Sander de Nooij in de mail: http://vimeo.com/8491887. In acht minuten trok een etmaal in winters Utrecht aan mijn oog voorbij. Wondermooi gemonteerd. ‘This city is what it is, because our citizens are what they are’, las ik. Zag buspassagiers op de Potterstraat. Een fietsende moeder met kind in de berijpte Uithof. Op CS een machinist op de bok. De zon weerkaatste in de Rabo-torens Hoogmoed en Hebzucht. Een meeuw landde traag op het eerste flinterdunne ijs van de Maliesingel.
Ik werd gelukkig van onze stad. Fietste naar het nieuwjaarsfeest in de schouwburg. Zong met duizend stadgenoten: ’Ik waak over de stad, kijk al eeuwen naar beneden…’ Waarna Colin Benders een ‘Ode aan de stad Utrecht’ dirigeerde. Zijn orkest speelde bij een geprojecteerde tekst. Die ging over geschiedenis en dat je deze stad moet ontdekken. Over talent en over Rietveld. Over het erfgoed van Sint Maarten en het beschermend schild dat de stad is voor haar bewoners. De stad van Nijntje hoorde ik in violen en cello. De drukte van het verkeer in de blazers. De bas zat in de geschiedenis. En Benders toonde zich, in zijn post-Kyteman bestaan, opnieuw de koning van de climax. Daar zat ik met kippenvel.
Het staadsjie-van-ons werd me te veel. Hoe kom ik van dit geluksgevoel af? Aleid Wolfsen had het in zijn nieuwjaarstoespraak dríé keer over de etappe-finish van de Giro d’Italia op de Croeselaan. 'Neem allemaal vrij op 9 mei!', zei de burgemeester. Egg waor. Om die gedrogeerde, apotheekhoudende karavaan van fietsende verslaafden te zien aankomen. Wég was mijn overweldigende liefdesgevoel.

Music in Me supports and organizes different music related development projects for poor children in the Middle East. They use the power of music to improve tolerance and increase mutual respect between people in conflict zones. See film here

24 Hours in Utrecht

24 Hours in Utrecht is an observation of a modern society. It's an impression of life in a Dutch city. What we sought to capture is the strangeness of our daily life. On a very cold winter's day we took our camera and filmed this city for 24 hours.

Dutch journalist and tv host Cees Grimbergen wrote an article (6th of Januari, 2010) about this short documentary in the Dutch newspaper Het Algemeen Dagblad.

Costretta sotto il giogo dittatoriale, così diverso dagli ideali rivoluzionari che avevano alimentato gli animi dei cubani (primi fra tutti Fidel Castro ed Ernesto Guevara) durante gli anni cinquanta, Cuba sta lentamente puntando i piedi per avere indietro il libero arbitrio, assieme a tutti i diritti fondamentali e inattaccabili che si è lasciata togliere in cinquant’anni. Capita così che i ragazzi cubani stiano vivendo ora la loro rivoluzione musicale. Stanchi di sentir parlare della musica del loro paese solo in termini di salsa e Buena Vista Social Club, stanno mettendo assieme le prime band punk, metal e rap. Che strana sensazione sentir parlare del metal cubano. A parte questo, si è alzato subito un gran polverone: le autorità non sono affatto contente di queste prese di posizione, tantomeno delle contestazioni che ascoltano nelle canzoni di questi ragazzi. Li aggrediscono, minacciano e maltrattano. Li incarcerano per periodi più o meno lunghi, a seconda del “reato” commesso. Come racconta Gorki Luis Águila Carrasco, vocalist dei Porno Para Ricardo, un paio di suoi amici sono finiti in carcere per due anni perché trovati in possesso di una copia di Revolver, lo storico album dei Beatles. L’ironia è che non solo il motivo dell’arresto non era dovuto tanto al contenuto dell’album, quanto al nome (che faceva esplicitamente riferimento a un'arma...), ma che in una delle piazze di Cuba, c’è una statua in onore di John Lennon. Intervistando a turno i componenti delle band e della scena musicale indipendente, il regista propone una panoramica della situazione giovanile e del paese direttamente dalle impressioni dei diretti interessati. Tirando le somme, la situazione è molto simile a quella di altri paesi del mondo, come l’Italia: i ragazzi non vedono alcun futuro. Il presente è tangibile, ma non promette nulla. Nulla che non debba essere conquistato con pazienza e sopportazione. Sono stanchi di avere paura, stanchi di doversi affidare a una classe dirigente insensibile, disumana, lontana, che sembra considerarli solo quando cominciano a dare problemi. Vogliono più spazio per le loro passioni, per la loro musica, per esprimersi senza censura. La fermezza nelle intenzioni e la sfrontatezza di questi ragazzi sembrano essere l’unica risorsa contro le continue repressioni (il già citato Gorki è stato più volte perseguitato dalla polizia e incarcerato), tanto che, nel confronto, sembra che siano le autorità a uscirne debilitate. In realtà, quasi mai è così, ma questo documentario suggerisce, forse, che se nel tanto discusso futuro la situazione dovesse ancora peggiorare, la rivoluzione, di qualsiasi tipo essa sia, sarà sempre una delle opzioni da scegliere per far fronte a momenti di grave disagio. La regia è quella tipica del documentario, sintetica, con qualche lazzo registico. Prettamente, lascia più spazio ai dialoghi e alle testimonianze, ravvivati dai colori a tratto caldi e intensi e scuri e deprimenti di Cuba.

For our latest project we will travel for a period of four months to Argentina, Chile and Brazil, where we will carry out research for our next documentary. At the end of March 2009 we will be back in Holland.
For this documentary we will cooperate together again with producer Gijs van de Westelaken (Column Film) who was also involved in our film Cuba RebelioN.
In South America we’re going to the ALMA observatory in the Atacama desert in Chile (the driest place on earth), where we will conduct research and preliminary filming for a feature-length documentary.

ColdSun filming for a BBC World-documentary

Director Joshka Wessels commissioned us to film for the BBC World-documentary Go With the Flow. The Documentary will be broadcast on BBC World 13 March 2009 on the BBC Earth Reports.
In November 2008, the country carried out a three-day major exercise to prepare for the worst credible flood. In the worst case the dikes will break and one-third of the country will be flooded. In 2009 the Dutch government will implement a law to unlock major funding of more than 165 billion Euros to reinforce the dikes and strengthen the coastline.

The documentary film for BBC World entitled Go With the Flow, is about a recent disaster management exercise conducted by the Dutch authorities. It offers a rare, behind-the-scenes insight into the workings of state authorities and emergency services personnel.
The fictional disaster itself – a massive, once in a century flood that threatens to submerge large parts of the Netherlands beneath a wall of flood waters – is both dramatic and at the same time terrifyingly possible.
Alessio and Sander were offered unprecedented access to the disaster exercise and its participants, conducting interviews with Guusje ter Horst, the Dutch minister of Internal Affairs, as well as emergency services personnel, military strategists and a number of real-life flood victims.

A court in Havana, Cuba, has ordered a punk rock musician to pay a fine of 30 dollar for public disorder for playing his band's music too loud. However, Gorki Aguila was cleared of a more serious charge that could have led to a jail sentence.

De Cubaanse rockzanger Gorki Águila, Cuba's meest controversiële muzikant, is deze week gearresteerd. Hij wordt beschuldigd van 'sociaal gevaarlijk' gedrag. Águila staat bekend om zijn felle kritiek op het communisme, en dat is niet precies wat president Raúl Castro bedoelde toen hij het had over 'hervormingen'. Vrijdag begon een proces tegen hem.

De 19-jarige muzikant was juist bezig met opnames voor een nieuwe cd toen agenten zijn huis binnenvielen. Alleen de zanger moest mee, de rest van de band ging vrijuit. De arrestatie is het gevolg van de muziek van Águila, wiens teksten op zijn zachtst gezegd 'recht voor zijn raap' zijn.

Als symbool voor zijn band, met de op zich al provocerende naam 'Porno voor Ricardo', heeft Águila de communistische hamer en sikkel vervormd tot penis en sikkel. In het nummer 'Commandant' noemt hij Castro 'Comandante Pinga', ofwel Commandant Lul. Op de achtergrond van de videoclip is Castro te zien met zijn mond in de vorm van een anus.

Banaal en fris
Águila en zijn band zijn de afgelopen jaren vooral in het buitenland bekend geworden dankzij films als 'Habana Blues' en de Nederlandse documentaire 'Cuba Rebelión' van Sander de Nooij en Alessio Cuomo. Maar ook op Cuba zelf wordt vooral door jongeren naar zijn muziek geluisterd.

De muziek van 'Porno voor Ricardo' is een mengsel van rock en punk; authentieke Cubaanse underground. De toon is agressief, de teksten soms banaal, maar vaak ook fris en scherp en vrijwel altijd provocerend. Op hun website zegt de artiest geen enkele politieke partij te steunen, zeker de communisten niet.

Vrees voor repressailes
'Wij accepteren dit klote communisme niet. En als de prijs is dat we nergens mogen spelen, dan betalen we die', zegt Águila in de Nederlandse documentaire 'Cuba Rebelión'. De zanger wordt gezien als dé exponent van een jonge, kritische generatie Cubanen. Toch durft niemand hem uit te nodigen op concerten of festivals, uit vrees voor represailles van de regering.

Águila is al eens eerder gearresteerd. In 2003 werd hij opgepakt en veroordeeld tot vier jaar cel. Ook nu hangt hem eenzelfde straf boven het hoofd wegens 'sociaal gevaarlijk' gedrag. Daarmee worden in Cuba mensen opgepakt voor elke willekeurige activiteit die de staat niet zint.

Bekendheid
'Al die ideologie, die onzin, die ideologische rechtlijnigheid is om te verhullen dat ze het volk geen eten kunnen geven', zegt Águila. In hoeverre artiesten zich dit soort kritiek kunnen veroorloven in Cuba is niet eenvoudig te zeggen. Castro-getrouwe kunstenaars kunnen vaak heel kritische boeken schrijven of films maken. Dissidente artiesten worden voor veel minder opgepakt.

Van belang is ook de bekendheid. Wie zijn kritische liedjes in een achterkamertje blijft repeteren wordt met rust gelaten. Zodra de teksten vanaf een podium klinken of breder bekend worden volgt arrestatie; om van de persoon af te zijn, om hem te waarschuwen maar vooral om een voorbeeld te stellen. Het Cubaanse regime, zegt Águila, overleeft dankzij de angst. 'Iedereen zegt me: het is geweldig wat je doet. Maar niemand nodigt ons uit om te komen spelen, niemand!'

Cosmetisch
De arrestatie van Gorki Águila maakt duidelijk dat de 'hervormingen' die de nieuwe leider Raúl Castro heeft aangekondigd vooral cosmetisch van aard zijn - en geen millimeter verruiming betekenen van de individuele en artistieke vrijheden in Cuba.

Gorki Aguila : ce nom ne dit peut-être rien mais à Cuba, ce chanteur populaire de 39 ans est une figure emblématique de la révolution par la musique. Membre du groupe de punk-rock Porno Para Ricardo, cet auteur aux textes anticommunistes est détenu par la police cubaine depuis lundi. Sur le prétexte d'une «conduite présentant un danger prédélictueux», il a été interpellé à son domicile à La Havane. Son père, Luis Aguila, vient d'être informé que suite à ce «délit», Gorki risque entre un et quatre ans de prison.

Trafic. Le leader du groupe le plus censuré de l'île des Caraïbes, qui fut honoré en 2007 par la chaîne américaine CNN pour son courage, n'en est toutefois pas à son premier démêlé avec la justice. En 2003, il produit une vidéo à succès, et une station de radio de La Havane le nomme troisième rocker le plus populaire de Cuba. La même année, lors d'un festival rock, il est arrêté pour trafic de drogue. S'ensuit une condamnation, quelques mois plus tard, à quatre ans de prison. Les conditions du procès ont été vigoureusement contestées, notamment par Freemuse. Cette organisation internationale indépendante, qui lutte pour la liberté d'expression des musiciens du monde entier, lance alors en octobre 2003 une campagne internationale en faveur de Gorki, demandant au gouvernement de reconsidérer ce procès douteux. En 2005, la liberté conditionnelle lui est accordée.

Le cinéma cubain «indépendant» est lui aussi venu au secours du chanteur. Un documentaire dont le tournage vient de s'achever, lui est consacré. Il retrace les «aventures» de Gorki ainsi que celles de deux autres groupes de la scène underground. D'après Alessio Cuomo, coréalisateur du documentaire : «Le gouvernement est bien trop intelligent pour arrêter les groupes ouvertement. Il pratique plus subtilement l'intimidation : la police surveille de près tous les concerts et si besoin, menace familles et proches. Ils peuvent même demander de changer certaines paroles.»

Répression. Il rapporte que depuis l'arrivée au pouvoir de Raúl, le frère de Fidel Castro, la vie à Cuba a quelque peu évolué, notamment par la réapparition de nombreux biens de consommation. «Mais pour les Cubains qui gagnent environ 15 dollars par mois, rien n'a vraiment changé», continue Alessio Cuomo.

Le titre du film est volontairement ambigu : Cuba Rebelion. Rébellion contre qui ? Contre quoi ? Mais aujourd'hui, le gouvernement des frères Castro n'est pas dupe. Les réalisateurs ne craignent cependant pas la répression. Le projet est désormais trop connu du public cubain pour que les autorités, qui vantent le changement, se risent à le censurer.

The documentary film ‘¡Cuba RebelióN!’ is an unusual and very outspoken portrait of the Cuban underground music scene. It’s about the punk-rock and metal musicians rebelling against the bureaucracy and imposed conformity of the Castro regime.

The film gives an historical overview of music in Cuba through the musicians’ stories. It tells about how rock music was forbidden in the 1980s and how you risked going to jail for two years only by possessing the Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ LP in the 1960s. Ironically - today there is a statue of John Lennon in a park in Havana. This example illustrates the hard process and the time it can take to get your music approved by musical institutions in Cuba.

In prison without trial
To get accepted by the state owned musical companies the groups need approval by the Cultural Ministry. One of the refused groups is Qva Libre. Despite being one of the most ambitious and popular groups they are not signed at any record label.

Since the music played on Cuban radio stations mostly consists of traditional music, such as salsa, the alternative music scene is spread through word of mouth. The musicians witness about how music videos often are censored and that there is nothing to do about it.

'I’m fed up with it', says Gorki Luis Águila Carrasco from Porno Para Ricardo in the film. He has spent more than four months in a maximum security prison without a trial. According to him, people are put into prison only 'for making art which is not politically correct'. He will never forget the terrible conditions and how he suffered in jail.

Speaking out
Porno Para Ricardo is probably the most censored band in Cuba. They belong to the few who dares to speak out against the system. 'Everybody says to me and all the other bands say to me: ‘It’s great what you are doing. It is fantastic.’ But no one invites me or the band to come and play. Not anymore', says Gorki.

'There are things in Cuba that you just can’t say', tells Carlo, working for an association aiming to help and promote artists. 'We all have to accept this.' But Gorki is impatient for change. His favourite punk motto is ‘No future’, meaning that the present is most important.

Breaking with a system
Gorki and the others are fighting for more than their freedom of expression. They are fighting for the freedom to be who they are and to be accepted and respected. ¡Cuba RebelióN! is a powerful portrayal of how to break with a political system that not only exists on a institutional level, but also regulates the people’s very way of thinking and being.

Cuba RebelioN! is a documentary about Cuban underground punk-rock and metal musicians who rebel against the Castro-regime. It shows the daily struggle of artists who dare to make a statement with their songs. And it features great music - the kind you won’t expect.

One of these musicians is Gorki Luis Águila Carrasco, from the punk-rock band Porno Para Ricardo. With anti-communist songs like ‘El Commandante’ and ‘El Cake’ the band became very popular in Cuba. In 2003, when Gorki had just produced an award-winning video and was announced as the third most popular rockstar in Cuba, he was suddenly arrested on charges of drug trafficking. Human Rights organisations say that his arrest is just a way to silence him for political reasons. After two years Gorki was released, but he is still blacklisted.

The documentary follows Porno Para Ricardo, the metalband Escape and the rap/rock band QVA Libre, featuring concert footage and interviews with these musicians. It shows the painful reality of artists who can’t express themselves publicly.

Cuba RebelioN! is directed by Dutch filmmakers and musicians Alessio Cuomo and Sander de Nooij. They went to Cuba with their camera and their guitars and illegally filmed the rise of a new generation of young artists who are fed up with the communist regime and want to make a change with their music, even at the risk of imprisonment.

Cuba Rebelion laat 3 Cubaanse bands zien die met hun muziek rebelleren tegen het communistische regime. Na de film vertelt vrijwilliger van IKV Pax Christi, Folkje Lips, over de censuur op literatuur in Cuba en de boekencampagne van IKV Pax Christi.

Salsa, rum, dikke sigaren en Buena Vista Social Club. Dat zijn de clichés over Cuba. Maar het land kent ook een ander gezicht, van een nieuwe generatie die voor meer vrijheid strijdt. De documentaire Cuba RebelióN volgt drie regimekritische bands in hun muzikale gevecht tegen het dictatoriale bewind. Binnen de underground muziekscene hebben slechts enkelen de moed om met hun muziek te rebelleren tegen de autoriteiten. Cuba ziet al bijna een halve eeuw iedere vorm van kritiek als een bedreiging voor het communistische gedachtegoed en bestraft dit meedogenloos. Ondanks de creatieve onderdrukking is er in Havana de laatste 10 jaar een beweging van jonge muzikanten opgestaan die met hun muziek een statement durven maken. Een van die artiesten is Gorki Carrasco, leadzanger van de punkrock band Porno Para Ricardo. Gorki heeft twee jaar vastgezeten voor het zingen van contrarevolutionaire songs.

Na het vertonen van de documentaire (50 min.) vertellen de makers Alessio Cuomo en Sander de Nooij over het turbulente ontstaansproces. Daarna schetst Cuba-specialist Edwin Koopman (oud-correspondent voor Trouw en de Wereldomroep, auteur van "De Ritselaars van Havana") de invloed van censuur op het dagelijkse leven van de Cubanen. Folkje Lips, die in juli als vrijwilliger voor IKV Pax Christi naar Cuba is geweest, zal wat vertellen over de censuur in literatuur op Cuba en over de boekencampagne van IKV Pax Christi.

Zaterdag 27 november heeft De Wereld Is Niet Te Koop onder het motto van: 'Liever kunst op straat dan commercieel geblaat', een steigerreclame van Apple aan de Amsterdamse Raadhuisstraat bedekt met een schildering van 100 vierkante meter.
De actie is een statement tegen de oprukkende commercialisering van onze steden en is één van de vele acties die door De Wereld Is Niet Te Koop (DWINTK) wordt georganiseerd.

Het doel van acties als deze is mensen bewust maken van de vergaande commercialisering en de oneerlijke globalisering. In plaats van spandoekacties gebruikt DWINTK ludieke en moderne vormen van actievoeren zoals adbusts en muziekclips.
Zo heeft DWINTK met Def P en Samira een lied met bijbehorende videoclip gemaakt. MTV weigerde het nummer 'De Wereld Is Niet Te Koop' uit te zenden, maar op de Box stond het binnen een week op nummer 10 van de meest aangevraagde clips.

Naast adbusting en ‘vreedzame acties van burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid’ om de bewustwording te veranderen, wil DWINTK ook alternatieve oplossingen verzinnen voor de bekende problemen als het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict en de oorlog in Irak. Hiervoor voeren ze gesprekken met opinieleiders en proberen ze manieren aan te dragen 'hoe het ook kan'. Op de website van DWINTK staan artikelen gebaseerd op deze gesprekken.

Het doel van actiegroep DWINTK is uiteindelijk een andere globalisering. Een meer democratische, vreedzame, (economisch) duurzame en gelijkwaardige wereld.

Vijf dierenactivisten die worden verdacht van een gewelddadige inval bij een nertsfokkerij in Putten staan vrijdag voor de politierechter.

In totaal werden er bij die actie 49 activisten opgepakt. Dat is uniek, want het is de eerste grote arrestatie na honderden acties van dierenactivisten. Ze worden extra hard aangepakt omdat de politie een voorbeeld wil stellen voor andere dierenactivisten.

Deze zaak leidde tot harde woorden in de Tweede Kamer: een meerderheid wil de dierenactivisten bestempelen als terroristen. Maar de activisten zijn niet onder de indruk: zij gaan door met hun acties.
